Chile & Beans O’Vootee
Slim Gaillard
Filmed in 1948
Gaillard frequently opened for artists like Coleman Hawkins and Charlie Parker.
Like Dizzy Gillespie he loved to joke around, but like Dizzy there was nothing lightweight about his virtuosity.
Gaillard was a prominent jazz club fixture on both coasts in the 40s and 50s with regular gigs in Los Angeles and New York (mostly at Birdland.)
That’s Bam Brown on bass.
Slim also had a long running musical partnership with Slam Stewart.
