Coleman Hawkins’ Quintet

This performance from the Coleman Hawkins Quintet was filmed in London, England during October of 1964 featuring Coleman Hawkins, tenor saxophone; Harry “Sweets” Edsion, trumpet; Sir Charles Thompson, piano; Jimmy Woode, bass; and Jo Jones drums.

Jazz drummer Jo Jones was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 7, 1911 and died on September 3, 1985 in New York City.

*Jo Jones’s percussion style influenced the modern Jazz drummer’s tendency to play timekeeping rhythms on a suspended cymbal, now known as the ride cymbal. He would also continue a ride rhythm on hi-hat while it was continuously opening and closing instead of the common practice of striking it while it was closed. Jones often omitted bass drum playing altogether, in contrast to drummer Gene Krupa’s loud, insistent pounding of the bass drum on each beat.

*In 1979, Jones was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame for his contribution to the Birmingham, Alabama musical heritage. He was the 1985 recipient of an American Jazz Masters fellowship awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts.
