Lester Young Quartet

This record was made in New York by the Lester Young Quartet on December 28, 1943 with Lester Young, tenor sax; Johnny Guarnieri, piano; Slam Stewart, string bass; and Big Sid Catlett, drums.

*”Sometimes I’m Happy” was first introduced in the Broadway musical “Hit the Deck,” starring Stanley Holloway which opened in April, 1927. The music was written by Vincent Youmans, and the lyrics by Irving Caesar.

*Slam Stewart found regular session work throughout the 1940’s with artists such as Lester Young, Fats Waller, Coleman Hawkins, Erroll Garner, Art Tatum and many others. For the remainder of his career he worked steady, incorporating his unique bass playing style in a multitude of settings. Salm would go on to teach music at the State University of New York and Yale University.
