Summertime
Billie Holiday and her Orchestra
1936 recording
This recording was made by Billie Holiday and her Orchestra in 1936 with Bunny Berigan, trumpet; Artie Shaw, clarinet; Joe Bushkin, piano; Dick McDonough, guitar; Pete Peterson, bass; and Cozy Cole, drums.
The song rose to fame from it’s appearance in George Gershwin’s musical “Porgy and Bess” in which, during the opening act singer/actress, Abbie Mitchell sings “Summertime” as a lullaby to her baby.
