Body and Soul

Chu Berry and his Little Jazz Ensemble

1938 recording

Chu Berry and Roy Eldridge recorded in New York City on November 11, 1938.

The session responsible referred to as the “Forty-Six West Fifty-Two” captured a band listed as “Chu Berry and his Little Jazz Ensemble” -Interestingly, “Little Jazz” was Eldridge’s nickname.

Although Berry’s tenor saxophone recording of “Body and Soul” was made eleven months prior to that of his mentor Coleman Hawkins it has been suggested that it may have served as a template for the later and more famous rendition.

Personnel:

Chu Berry, tenor sax
Roy Eldridge, trumpet
Clyde Hart, piano
Danny Bakrer, guitar
Artie Shapiro, bass
“Big Sid” Catlet, drums
