Lena Horne

Lena Horne sings the title song in the 1943 film “Stormy Weather.”

Born in Bedford–Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, Lena Horne went to live with relatives in Georgia when she was five.

In 1933 she became a chorus girl at the Cotton Club in Harlem and scored an role in the “Cotton Club Parade” the following year along with her mentor Adelaide Hall.

Towards the end of the ’30s Lena Horne began touring with the Orchestra of Noble Sissle with whom she made her fist recording shortly thereafter.

With two low-budget films “The Duke is Tops” (1938), “Boogie Woogie Dream”, and the full feature “Panama Hattie” (1942) already to her credit in 1943 she won a starring role in the motion picture musical Stormy Weather.”

By the 1950s Lena became disillusioned with Hollywood and became to concentrate solely on her career as a nightclub singer.
