Hazel Scott

A brilliant jazz pianist and a fine singer, Hazel Scott (1920-81) may not be a household name today but she was a phenomenal talent.

Fortunately Ms. Scott appeared in several movies, usually in one scene that stole the show.

1943’s I Dood It, a Red Skelton film, had one of her best scenes, coming up with dazzling variations on “Takin’ A Chance On Love” while smiling much of the time, making her virtuosity on the piano look effortless.

Incidentally, the bassist in this memorable performance is Red Callender.
