Lil’ Darlin’
Count Basie and his Orchestra
Milan 1960
Today we feature Count Basie and his Orchestra playing “Li’l Darlin’ “.
Award-winning broadcaster Henry Holloway writes: “I have two late friends involved in this one, the Count and composer-arranger Neal Hefti. At the 1979 North Sea Jazz Festival at The Hague in Holland the Basie Band thrilled the packed main hall. The morning after, I had breakfast with Mr Basie and members of his band at the hotel where we all stayed, as I had earlier showed him an article about him which included a special sentence. “William Basie had his first piano lessons as a child from a German lady named Holloway.” The Count smiled and wrote across it “To Henry; thanx and love”.
